The world online: travel e-books on Scribd
It has been introduced as a Spotify for books. Scribd is a popular online service for English-language digital books. I signed up a few weeks ago and was amazed that Scribd is an enormous resource for travel books. How could I not have known? For a monthly subscription fee you have direct online and offline access to hundreds and hundreds of up-to-date travel guides on every region of the world.
The well-known Lonely Planet series is the most visible on the Scribd travel category. All e-books are of a recent date, fully accessible and there are many… But you can also gauge on a library of Insight Guides, Moon travel handbooks and the Footprint series. This is a must starting point for your travel preparations. In under an hour I made my own online collection of travel guides, novels and the like on Canada.
Family travel on Scribd
As you know, families travelling sometimes have different needs than your regular traveling backpacker. There are no e-travel guides dedicated to family travel per country available yet on Scribd. The Lonely Planet Travel with children, your complete resource however has been added to the online collection. It has some great tips. I would not buy the guide itself, but to have this available on Scribd is the ideal solution. It is a comprehensive guide to general information on preparation, camping and long-term travel as a family. Its chapters per continent and personal stories from travelling families are a handy resource to start your travel planning.
Flat Stanley’s Worldwide Adventures
To prepare and involve your children in your travels or to read about different cultures and countries, there is lots to find on Scribd. I love the Flat Stanley’s Worldwide Adventures series. Stanley has travelled quite a bit so to see. There are books on China, Canada, Egypt, Mexico, Japan and several on destinations in the USA such as Washington and Mount Rushmore. Stanley even has a safari adventure in Kenya to his name. These Harper Collins e-books are suitable for ten-year olds and older to read themselves.
If you are looking for inspiration for your next trip, there’s much to discover in this online library of e-books. I might give 1000 places to see before you die a try. Preparing your children in travelling and teaching them about countries and cultures is one thing. But how about indulging in a novel about far-away places. I added Around the world in 80 dinners, Green Hills of Africa by Ernest Hemingway and Shadow of the Silk Road by Colin Thubron to my Scribd collection Travel novels.
